Me & Niall with Ali & Brendan at the start of our trip
This 4 day tour from Tupiza, around by the Chilean border and finally finishing up at the Salt Flats in Uyuni, was probably the highlight of our entire trip in South America.
We got to spend 4 days in a jeep with Brendan & Ali from Oz (it sounds like a long time stuck in a jeep but didn’t feel like it with excellent company!).
We spent 2 nights in small Bolivian villages – untouched by tourists (other than ourselves in our modest dorms). At each stopover for the night the 2nd 4x4 from Tupiza Tours would join up with us for dinner and accommodation and all 8 of us who were on the tour got on like a house on fire, as well as our drivers and cooks who looked after us so well for the trip. We felt so lucky to be on this tour with such great people!
We took the most scenic toilet breaks we’ll ever experience; saw amazing sunsets/ sunrises; saw many different coloured lakes with mountainous backdrops; got up close to hundreds of flamingos; spent the night in a hotel made completely of salt (even the beds!); and eventually saw our most memorable sunrise yet over the vast Salt Flats.
There’s really too much scenery to describe & too many anecdotes to tell so instead here’s our Salt Flat tour highlights:
1st stop outside Tupiza
Village stay 1st night
Ruins of an old village
Chasing Llamas!
4855 metres altitude
Best "naturelle" toilet break I've ever taken
Geysers
Niall with Gerard - our driver & guide
The day both our sunglasses broke exactly the same way!
Lago Colorado, the red lake
Flamingos at the lake
'Valley of the Rocks'
Frozen snow in the middle of the desert!
A typical lunch stop in the middle of nowhere!
Salt Hotel. Walls are salt...beds are salt...everything is salt!

This is how ridiculous we look when coordinating a trick photo!
Dancing with Nancy on the salt flats... a first for her!!
